Tourism operators hail planned China-Indonesia direct
flight
JAKARTA (indo.com): Tourism operators in Bali have hailed
the government's efforts to initiate the planned opening
of the direct flight between China and Indonesia.
"If possible the plane from China will fly directly to the
Ngurah Rai Airport before heading for Jakarta, because Bali
is Indonesia's tourism primadona," said I Gusti Bagus Yudara,
chairman of local chapter of the Tourism Association, in
Denpasar recently.
He said that that the direct flight between China and Indonesia
would serve as a breakthrough to generate Indonesian tourism
in 2001.
"Hopefully, the planned China-Indonesia direct flight will
soon be realized," he said.
He added that local travel agents have responded positively
to the planned China-Indonesia direct flight because China
is one of the new potential markets for the archipelago's
tourism, with a population of around 1.2 billion.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardhika
said that aspects of the China-Indonesia direct flight was
still being studied, in particular the preparation of tourism
packages.
He said that it had not been decided which airport in Indonesia
would be used. "This is also under review. Along with travel
bureaus, we are also arranging tour packages," Ardhika said,
adding that the flight linking the two countries had an
important meaning considering that a Cninese study was also
underway to make Indonesia a tourism destination for Chinese
tourists.
Sources said that Chinese tourists have shown a keen interest
in visiting Indonesia, Bali in particular.
Under the Abdurachman Wahid administration, the government
has issued a free visa policy to Chinese people visiting
Indonesia.
