RI to see 6% rise in the number of tourists in 2001
JAKARTA (indo.com): Indonesia is predicted to see some
5.4 million tourists visiting the country in 2001, a 6%
rise, compared to only a 2.3% increase in 2000, Minister
of Culture and Tourism I Gde Ardika said in Denpasar, Bali
recently.
Ardika said continuous tourism campaigns were being focused
on traditional markets such as Japan, Taiwan, Germany, the
United States, the Netherlands and other European countries.
The government, he said, is also planning to launch tourism
drives to potential markets such as China, the Middle-East,
South Africa and Eastern Europe.
As a result of these tourism campaigns, he said, Indonesia
was expected to meet the target of 5.4 million. Assuming
that each tourist spends US$100, with an average length
of stay of 10 days, Indonesia would receive around Rp 5.4
billion in foreign exchange.
The minister also expressed his optimism that the tourist
target of 5.1 million for 2000 would also be met considering
that the number of tourists coming from 13 entry points
for January -October 2000 period had already reached 3.5
million. He said that the number of tourists coming from
other points of entry had not been counted.
He also asked the public to be aware of the need to create
and maintain security because "security is a key factor
to boost international trust in Indonesia and encourage
more tourists to visit the country."
