Garuda Indonesia sees 12% drop in Australians but expects
flight recovery
JAKARTA (indo.com): State-owned flag carrier Garuda
Indonesia said it saw a 12% drop in the number of Australian
tourists utilizing their flight facilities over the last
twelve months but expected that it would recover in the
near future.
Garuda Indonesia's Care Taker General Manager for Bali-Indonesia,
Sofyan Anwar, said that the drop (seen especially in the
period of January-February) was attributable to the unfavourable
diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Australia resulting
from political conflict occurring in East Timor after the
ballot on August 30, 1999.
He said that prior to the critical diplomatic relationship
between Indonesia and Australia, Garuda Indonesia saw the
Denpasar-Australia load factor reaching an average of 80%
per month.
Garuda offers a Denpasar-Perth flight service daily, whereas
Denpasar-Sydney and Denpasar-Melbourne fly five times per
week respectively. Denpasar-Adelaide flies four times per
week, with Denpasar-Brisbane and Denpasar-Auckland at three
times per week respectively.
"Hopefully, the Denpasar-Australia flight condition will
gradually recover in the near future. Australia is one of
Bali's most important target markets," Sofyan was quoted
by Antara as saying.
He said that in terms of overseas flight routes, the Denpasar-Japan
route ranked the highest, at 85%, followed by Denpasar-Europe
at 78%, with Denpasar-Australia at 68% from the previous
80%.
