Private sector told to take part in beautifying Jakarta
JAKARTA (indo.com): Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso has asked
the private sector to take part in beautifying Jakarta by
setting aside some of their revenue to build park statues.
"We (the Jakarta administration) focus on building parks
and and gardens along protocol streets, such as Jl. MH Thamrin
and Jl. Sudirman. But we also want the private sector to
complete this process with a high quality statue of Thamrin
or Sudirman," the Governor said in a speech in conjunction
with the launch of Visitors' Guide to Jakarta here recently.
"Statues erected in beautiful gardens will mean a lot to
our next generation," he said.
He said that he had a dream of making Jakarta like Amsterdam
in terms of parks and tidiness. "It would look beautiful
if parks and gardens were built along all the streets in
Jakarta," he said, adding that the Jakarta administration
has spent billions of rupiah on building and maintaining
the city's parks.
He also expressed his regret over some people's behaviour
in Jakarta, saying, "the sad thing is the inclination to
damage things (by certain individuals) appears to have been
inherited from their ancestors. I hope that the destructive
nature will gradually be brought to an end."
The Governor also underscored the importance of law and
order that all Jakarta citizens should help to maintain.
"With security and safety assured, foreign visitors will
not be afraid of coming to the city. And if many visitors
come to Jakarta, then this will be good for our tourism
business. Our hotel occupancy rate will increase and this
will have economic multiplier effects," he noted.
Meanwhile, PT Media Dutaservisindo's Commissioner Pri Sulisto
said that the Visitors Guide to Jakarta provides comprehensive
information on the city, important for both local residents
and foreign tourists. "The 50,000 copies will be distributed
to every four and five-star-rated hotels in Indonesia,"
he said.
