Govt sets up Indonesia Tourism Community

JAKARTA (indo.com): The government has officially announced the establishment of the Indonesian Tourism Community (MPI) aimed to expedite the process of utilizing the tourism sector to the public at large.

The Indonesian Tourism Community, which serves also as a pressure group, has been set up on the basis of the Ministerial Decree No. KEP-21MPK/XI/2000, dated 13 November 2000. The establishment of the MPI was announced by Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardika in Jakarta recently.

Executives of the MPI will stem from various parties including the tourism industry, tourism associations, the press, the public and legislative institutions.

Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardika said that the presence of the MPI is expected to expedite the tourism development process. In the first stage, the MPI will consist of two commissions, namely the Permanent Commission and the Adhoc Commission. The Permanent Commission will consist of a Marketing and Promotions Commission, a Product and Development Commission and a Human Resource Development Commission. "The three commissions will serve as the think tank of the MPI," he added.

Meanwhile, chief Executive of the MPI, Pontjo Sutowo, said that the MPI was expected to absorb people's aspiration and serve as a bridge regarding the government's role in implementing tourism development programs.

"The MPI is expected to serve as a government think tank in formulating policy and the tourism development plan," he said, adding that with the existence of the MPI, the tourism community would unify their perceptions on tourism.
