Bali to hold 'Festival of Peace'

DENPASAR (indo.com): Balinese artists will hold a 'Festival of Peace'in the Denpasar Art Center from April 6 - 8, 2002.

As Bali consists of heterogeneous communities, local people are expected to be aware of the need to preserve culture. Kadek Suardana, an organizing committee member, said that with the festival, artists are able to demonstrate Indonesia's diversity of cultures, either through joint or solo performances.

A Legong Dance, the dance of rite, will be performed at the opening ceremonies. The dance depicts how Balinese people in the past relied on agriculture and maintained a spirit of togetherness to carry out the collective work.

The festival will also feature a drawing competition for kids, aimed at developing children's ideas of Indonesia's cultural diversity. Dances to be performed will include Barongsai and joint dance performances. Paintings and installation arts works will also be on display in the upcoming festival.
