Gamelan Festival held in Jogja
JAKARTA (indo.com): Visitors to Yogyakarta in Central
Java had a special treat when scores of musicians gathered
and played the gamelan musical instruments in a program
called Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival. The festival was held
on July 10-14, 2002. The event also features bazaar, exhibition,
workshop and talk show.
Musicians taking part in the festival include Irwansyah
Harahap from Medan, Wesleyan-Sekar Jepun-STSI Bali (USA-Japan-Bali)
, Tadulako (Palu) , Marusya N.A. (Jakarta), Banjar Teratai
Capung (Bali)
Padhang Moncar (New Zealand), Voices from the Vacant Lot
(Australia), SONYOL Cs (Yogyakarta), Planet Bamboo Ensemble
(Bali-Australia) , Himaka STSI Bandung (Bandung), Kolaborasi
Canada-Yogya), Nyawoung Aceh Comm (Aceh), De Sakai (Pekanbaru).
In the last of 20th century and beginning of 21st century,
Gamelan is developing nicely. In many countries of the
world, gamelan art is living beautifully, with classical
gamelan music (gending) living side by side with contemporary
gamelan music.
"Gamelan has an urgent position in developing global
culture. Gamelan groups are involved in cultural activities
in many countries," said an organizing committee
of the festival.
"So, it is very important for gamelan lovers all
around the world to communicate with each other,"
he added.
