Old Gambuh dance maintains its appeal
DENPASAR (indo.com): On July 10, 2002, the Bali Art Festival
hosted one of the island's oldest cultural performances,
the Gambuh dance-play, enthralling spectators. Further
performances are scheduled for July 15 at Wantilan and
Ayodya Hall at 8 p.m.
When
performed, the elaborate Gambuh play dance is accompanied
by a gamelan pegambuhan orchestra, producing wonderful
flute music. The dancers demonstrate their skill in adapting
to the music.
Performed in the little-known ancient Balinese language,
this dance is an heirloom of the 14th century Majapahit
Kingdom. It was first performed to honor the royal family
and Hindu nobility of ancient Java, and later Bali. The
Javanese influence can still be seen in the movements,
although it has adapted significantly to reflect elements
of Balinese culture.
The famous Barong Sai, or Lion Dance, will be performed
on the final day of the Bali Art Festival on Ardha Chandra
at 10. 00 am.
