Artist to exhibit 2000 Betawi's Ondel-Ondel

JAKARTA (Indo.com): An artist is slated to exhibit as many as 2000 Betawi mascots, known as Ondel-Ondel at the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park (TMII).

"I am very much interested in Ondel-Ondel because of its character. The pedigree of Ondel-Ondel itself is interesting," artist Suprayogi told Indo.com here over the weekend.

The exhibition will commence on December 31 and will run to Jan. 31, 2001.

The 37-old artist said that one Ondel-Ondel with their large masks and tinsel-spinked head-dresses look simple as many people have said but "it will become special when hundreds of them stand together in rows."

The thee-meter high mascot weighs 20 kilograms.

He said that the making of the mascots started on August 25 and is expected to finish by December 2000.

He declined to disclose the amount of funds required for the making of 2000 Ondel-Ondel. But he expressed the hope that individuals or companies will be interested in sponsoring the art project.

Suprayogi said that the exhibition is expected to be included into the Indonesian Museum Record (Muri) or the Guinness Book of Record. "That's my target," he added.
