GEOGRAPHY
Dompu is one of the seven regencies
in West Nusa Tenggara, located in the middle of Sumbawa Island, between
longitude 17.40 - 18.30 East and between latitude 09.10 - 08.55
South.
Dompu covers an area of 2.324 sq. km., most of which is
mountainous and hilly. Like other regions in West Nusa Tenggara, Dompu
has a tropical climate and it has two seasons: the rainy season
between October and March, and the dry season between April
and September.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Dompu originates from the Kingdom of Dompu contained in the empire
of Majapahit under the prominent viceroy Gajah Mada. In the Islamic
period of Indonesian national history, it was converted into a
Sultanate called Dompo Sultanate.
TOURIST OBJECTS
Lakey Coast
is a tourist resort with the longest white sand beach and
virgin nature in
West Nusa Tenggara. This coast, with waves varying from 8 to 15
feet, is one of the best locations for surfers looking
for challenging breaks: nangas, periscopes,
Lakey Pipe, and Lakey Peak. Its reputation has long
been a widely held secret among surfers, earning itself the name
"Sumbawa Surf." Its natural beauty appeals to both surfers
as well as non-surfers looking for holiday destinations.
The Coast of Cempi Gulf
with its white sandy beach and virgin forest, boasting natural
beauty and fascination.
Nanga Tompu Coast
with isles at the Saleh Gulf can be enjoyed on the way from
Sumbawa to Dompu by land transportation.
South Tambora and its surroundings provide
a breathtaking panoramic view of the Buru resort.
South Tambora, with a fascinating Savanna with the background of Mount
Tambora, is densely inhabited by wild pigs.
You can find the dazzling combination of coasts and cool mountains
presenting an amazing panorama of the South and Southwest Slopes of
Mount Tambora on the island side, and
directly facing Moyo and Satonda isles.
Satonda Isle has a unique lake and
splendid marine park serving as an attraction to tourists, both local
and overseas.
Dompu has gradully been develop to be an agrotourism
regency with
outstanding commodities like coffee, cashew nut plantations,
stock breeding, and production forests extending along the Southern slope
of Maount Tambora. Culturally,
one of the most prominent rituals in Dompu is the Lu'u Daha,
usually held in the Moslem Month of Rajab.
It begins with the Jara Sara'u procession,
an equestrian attraction performed by the riders to the traditional misic
rhythm.
