”Climate Change Issues:
How the wisdom of Balinese to anticipate the issue?”

Bali will host the 13th Conference of the Parties COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as well as the 3rd Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Kyoto Protocol from3 to 14 December 2007 at Nusa Dua.

As to prepare the international conference on the climate change, a collaboration of several non government Organisations; Bali Organic Association (BOA), Wahana Lingkungan Bali (Walhi Bali), Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidup (Environment Education Centre-PPLH Bali) and Wisnu Foundation held a dialogue with Bali people concerning the climate change issues and to formulate a message to be endorsed toward the 13th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The collaboration was held a half day discussion on Thursday, 20 September 2007 at Nari Graha Building, Denpasar.

The UNFCC Conference in Bali in December 2007 will be a great opportunity for the Bali people to comprehensively understand what is climate change and what the effect will human bear in the end and also how Bali people with its ancient wisdom will be able to endorse their solution concerning the global warming and also to participate actively in the conference.

The discussion was attended by Hira Jhamtani, an environmentalist, Ida Pedanda Sebali Tianyar Arimbawa a Religion Leader, Nyoman Sadra Tenganan Village Leader. About 100 people from students to village leaders and other NGO's volunteers were attended the discussion.

For commoners in Bali, climate change is not easy to understand. They only comprehend that the climate change is a mere of when the rain season become dry season and when the dry season came along, the rain fall instead of the shining sun. Wherever the climate change is not so simple like that.

In the discussion which took theme ”Climate Change Issues: How the wisdom of Balinese to anticipate ?” Bali is chosen to host the important conference that concerning the fate of the earth and the world because Bali people is express their devotion to the Nature.

Mr Sadra, Tenganan Village Leader said that along with Bali people daily offerings to the deities, there's a wisdom that people should pass down the tradition to their descendants. Because the materials for the offerings were not a casual flowers, fruit or water, but only pure water from certain spring can be use for the offerings.

The offerings forced Bali people to conserve their environment, so that the tradition will not cease at the generation, said Mr. Sadra.

Mr. Sadra said that Nyepi Day (Silence Day) is also a part as Bali people effort to purify the nature. On that day, once each year, Bali people is prohibited to work, to go leisure, lighting flame and having fun. It means to give the earth the time to rest, to take a breath without having any emission to go up the atmosphere. And the next day after the Nyepi day, the air will be very refreshing.

He said that Nyepi day can be endorsed to the conference to minimise the emissions as advise by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
