'Tourism operators should not fear demonstration'

JAKARTA (indo.com): Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardhika has advised tourism operators not to be discouraged by politically-linked demonstrations but see them in a positive light since demonstrations are a natural part of the democratic process.

"We have to go through protests in our efforts to build up democracy," the Minister said in a discussion with the theme "the Fate of Nation Amidst the Political Turbulence" here recently.

Ardhika made the remarks in response to the massive politically-linked demonstrations that have frequently been staged against the current administration. The frequent demonstrations that have tended to turn to acts of anarchism have been feared to have adverse effects on tourism development in Indonesia.

He said that despite the massive demonstrations, tourism activities should continue hand in hand with the demonstrations. "Tourists should not be put off by the demos," he said.

The urgent need is to provide adequate information on the current situation on Indonesia to the international community. "By providing information on the current situation of Indonesia, it is expected that they (foreign travellers) will develop a feeling of sympathy instead of antipathy," he said, adding that with the feeling of sympathy, it is expected that more and more foreign travellers will come to Indonesia.
