With stunning beaches, mountains and unique culture, Bali
is undeniably popular among international travelers. But
the Island of Gods has another attraction: an art of plaiting
hair. Many travelers to Bali, especially teenagers, do not
miss having their hair plaited.
Plaited-hair has become a growing life style in Bali, particularly
among tourists visiting Kuta and Sanur areas.
The increasing demand for hair plaiting service has encouraged
local women to evolve the art of hair plaiting into a business.
The business of hair plaiting flourishes in Bali.
The art of plaiting hair dates back to 1998 when a tourist
from Melbourne Australia asked a Balinese woman, Ketut Sukartini,
to develop a business of plaiting hair considering that
many foreign tourists love dread lock rasta.
Initially, customers were limited to Australian travelers
and special flattering words had to be given to lure customers
to have their hair plaited.
"However, the plaited hair is now very popular and
it also attracts tourists from Japan, China and Taiwan,"
said Ketut Sukartini, one of the hair-plaiting service provider
explained.
Hair-plaiting service rate is varied, depending on the
level difficulty. But, the service is relatively cheap.
"The hair-plaiting service for children is only Rp25,000
per person," said, adding, "Customers are mostly
teenagers."
She could earn between Rp500,000 and Rp1 million per day.
"But how much I earn each day depends on the number
customers having their hair plaited. Sometimes, I got only
several customers after spending the whole day on the beach
because more women now also run the business," she
explained.
"But I don't need to flatter would-be customers any
longer to have their hair plaited like I used to do,"
she said.
